Andreas Schirmer is assistant professor for Korean studies at Palacký University Olomouc. Holding a PhD in Modern German Literature from the University of Vienna, he has also completed (suryo) a PhD program in Korean Language and Literature at Seoul National University. Having served as an assistant professor at the Graduate School for Translation and Interpretation of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and as a regular docent at the Korea Literature Translation Institute, he returned to Vienna in 2010 as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer. In 2015 he started to teach in Olomouc.
The initiator and coordinator of a network among Korean studies programs in Central and Eastern Europe, overseeing exchange between 15 programs in 10 countries, he has also facilitated and hosted numerous conferences and workshops, has authored a textbook for German learners of Korean and has translated Korean literature into German.
His current research mostly relates either to the literary representation of discourses and issues in contemporary South Korea or to translation studies or to aspects of the historical exchange and interaction between Koreans and Europeans.
